Joao Pedro was heavily linked with a move to Champions League debutants Atalanta over the summer, but he is instead “honoured” to have renewed his ties with Cagliari.

“It could be defined as my seventh goal,” the attacking midfielder told reporters.

“People were talking about my future at the start of the season, and I wanted to respond on the pitch.

“I don’t need to tell you what Cagliari mean to me. It’s an honour to live here.

“I feel at home. My children are growing up here. There’s a lot of joy for me at Cagliari, I’m looking to contribute for the club in a very important year.”

The Brazilian’s five Serie A goals this season have helped the Rossoblu go nine games unbeaten, putting them in early contention for a top-six finish.

“The pressure is there because we are doing well, but it’s good pressure. It’s nice to be up there,” he added.

“It’s not luck, we’ve been working hard.”

This weekend they face Fiorentina, but the 27-year-old made it clear he was not daunted by the Viola’s recent resurgence.

“It will be a big test, but they’re a team I have scored many important goals against. We are only thinking about the match and about winning it.”
