Lecce President Saverio Sticchi Damiani is fuming over referee Gianluca Magnaniello's performance in the 4-2 loss against Lazio.

"It's a game that leaves regrets and recrminations. The team gave a great performance, and the pitch said different things in respect to the result, determined by questionable interpretations of the referee," the President told Sky Sport Italia.

Lecce thought they had levelled the game at 2-2, when Khouma Babacar's penalty was saved and Gianluca Lapadula turned in the rebound, however Lapadula was adjudged to have been in the penalty area as Babacar struck the ball.

VAR disallowed the goal rather than have the penalty retaken, despite the fact there were also two Lazio players who had encroached.

Lazio were then later awarded a penalty when Lecce defender Marco Calderoni handled the ball when deflected at him from point-blank range.

"It is difficult for our fans to explain this. I did not come here to comment on the penalty with Calderoni, who I am forced to accept that even though he is my player, he made a foul.

"I only speak of rules that must be applied. It was a great game by my Lecce. Maybe in football you are exaggerating a little with this technology [VAR].

"There might be protocols, but there are first and foremost written rules and those have not changed. The penalty should've been retaken."
