Lippi confirmed he would be resigning after China’s 2-1 defeat to Syria in 2022 World Cup qualifying on Thursday.

“If I present a team like this on the field…” rued the 71-year-old.

“I make a lot of money. And I don’t want to steal it from them. Therefore, I’m resigning tonight, irrevocably.”

The result left China five points adrift of leaders Syria in Group A of the Asian qualifying section with two games remaining.

The winners of the group proceed to the next qualification phase, as do the four best-placed teams who finish second.

The ex-Italy and Juventus boss only returned to the role in May, having previously been in charge between 2016 and January 2019.
