Alex Meret made his senior Italy debut, but also conceded the only Armenia goal in a 9-1 victory. “It was a really good shot.”
The Azzurri annihilated Armenia in the final Euro 2020 qualifier in Palermo, but just a few minutes after making his debut in place of Salvatore Sirigu, Meret was picking the ball out of his net.
“I will never forget my debut, it made me so proud and it was a wonderful night for Italian football. It’s a pity about conceding the goal, but we scored nine,” the Napoli goalkeeper told Rai Sport.
Jorginho’s sideways pass was intercepted and Edgar Babayan curled a scorcher into the top corner.
“It was a really good shot from a long way out, it bent at the end and was difficult to get hold of.”
Gianluigi Donnarumma and Salvatore Sirigu seem locked down, but it’s between Meret of Napoli and Atalanta’s Pierluigi Gollini for the third goalkeeper spot at Euro 2020.
“One of my objectives for this season is to be there at the tournament next summer. It’s up to the coach to decide, I will give my best throughout the campaign and be ready when and if I am called.”
