Midfielder Simone Missiroli admits SPAL have “become insecure” after a poor start to the season and hopes a good result against Genoa could “spur” them on.

Missiroli has played all 12 games in a squad suffering from injuries this term and the 33-year-old hopes some good performances could reunite the group.

“The results are the foundation and when they don’t arrive, we become insecure,” Missiroli told reporters at a press conference. “We can’t let this happen. Our strength needs to be the group and the ideas of the coach, who we believe in.”

This weekend they are facing a Genoa side in a similar situation, one point above SPAL in Serie A and just outside the bottom three.

“Against Genoa, this will be fundamental. We have failed in back-to-back matches at home, but you don’t think about being home or away. There’s a long way to go still, this could give us the push we need and spur us on.”

Federico Di Francesco has scored twice in five games on loan from Sassuolo this season and Missiroli is happy to have him back from injury.

“We have missed him a lot, he gives us another weapon up front. We hope [Marco] D’Alessandro and [Mohamed] Fares will also be back soon. There have been a lot of injuries at the start of this season.”
