Franck Ribery suggested this week that teammate Chiesa should be played more as a winger as opposed to a forward.
"For me, he is also a winger, but he can also play as a forward but he must improve to as a winger to play in a 3-5-2," replied Montella in his press conference.
"Chiesa is happy at scoring his first goal for Italy, but we expect a lot from him, we want him to score for us too."
Montella warned his side have to bounce back from the 5-2 defeat to Cagliari just before the international break.
"We cannot get this game wrong. We must remember the Cagliari game as to not make the same mistakes again. The team is fired up and they want to make up for that defeat. It will be a battle against Verona, because we play against a very hard and organised side. They've been one of the revelations of the season."
Fiorentina are without midfielders Erick Pulgar and Gaetano Castrovilli due to suspension, forcing Montella to shuffle his pack.
"I have several ideas. I do however have some doubts, as not all players are used to 90 minutes. For example, Sebastian Cristoforo has played very little. Szymon Zurkowski is a good guy and has quality, likewise Valentin Eysseric who hasn't even played up until now, and then there is also Rachid Ghezzal, we will see."
Montella was asked on his opinion about the meeting that took place this week between referees, coaches and directors of sport in order to clarify some issues surrounding refereeing decisions and the intepretation of VAR.
"We have clarified some issues. I am satisfied with how it went. I missed the first meeting that took place due to a game beng played, so it was interesting to be there this time."
Fiorentina are ninth in the Serie A table, whilst Verona sit just behind them.
