Catania CEO attacked by ultras

Serie C side Catania have abandoned a Coppa Italia match against Potenza after their CEO Pietro Lo Monaco was physically attacked by ultras.

The 65-year-old director, who has been at the club for many years, was on a ferry with the chief medic on his way to meet with the squad in their Villa San Giovanni hotel.

He was surrounded by 10 masked ultras who punched Lo Monaco in the face, leaving him with injuries and smashing his glasses.

Lo Monaco returned home after speaking to the police, while the squad was so stunned at the incident that they and the club decided to abandon today’s planned Coppa Italia match.

A statement from the Sicilian side noted it was a “vile and shameful attack, which was already predictable considering the threatening banner placed in the city.”

Lo Monaco had announced his resignation in a press conference yesterday, warning there was “a climate of poison” around the club.

“There are fans who love Catania and there are others who just do damage. I’ve seen everything lately.”
