Five Napoli supporters were arrested before the match against Liverpool on Merseyside, after a clash with the local police.
A statement from the police revealed that five fans were placed under arrest before and during the match between the top teams in Group E.
“Officers policing the LFC v Napoli CL game arrested five Napoli fans,” the statement read. “Three men were arrested for violent disorder and another was for affray following disorder on Walton Breck Road before the game.
“A fifth man was arrested for breach of the peace at the turnstiles on Anfield Road.”
Liverpool Echo reported that Napoli’s fans were holding their belts as a weapon, whilst “looking for trouble.”
“They were wandering around near the scarf vendors, with their belts out looking for trouble,” a fan told the newspaper. “The horses scared them, and they went towards their gate after this.”
It reportedly calmed down after the match, but the Merseyside police also responded to social media posts claiming Napoli fans were armed with golf clubs in the city centre.
“Officers have responded and confiscated a number of flags attached to flag poles. No golf clubs have been found,” they wrote in a statement.
The two teams also clashed on the pitch and it ended 1-1 after Dejan Lovren equalised Dries Mertens opener.
Napoli will secure a place in the last 16 with a draw against Genk in the last round, whilst Liverpool only need a point against RB Salzburg, which essentially would also secure qualification for the Partenopei – even if they were to lose at the San Paolo against the Belgians.
