“I am with them, so if anyone wants to criticise, then can do it directly to me.”

Sky Sport Italia are already reporting the Viola could sack coach Montella to bring in Gennaro Gattuso.

“There is no news on the coach. I have to look at every game individually and how the results arrive. It’s true, our position in the table does not make pleasant reading, but that’s life.

“When things are going badly, you have to protect the team. I spoke to the players and didn’t expect this drop in form. We might bring in reinforcements in January.”

Federico Chiesa was already in the stands due to a thigh injury, but Franck Ribery had to be helped off the field at half-time with a sprained ankle.

“Ribery will have the tests tomorrow and we’ll know more about the situation.”
