Cagliari’s 2-2 draw against Lecce last Monday was a backward step, according to coach Rolando Maran, and he wants to get back on track with Sampdoria.
The Sardinians have been the surprise package of the season, and are currently in the hunt for a Champions League place, yet Maran was unhappy at the performance against Lecce.
“We certainly didn’t play very well. We came from some matches that were played at the very highest level. Something was missing from the game [against Lecce], but we played with the right commitment," said the coach in his press conference.
“But Lecce deserved something from the game, as they proved against Fiorentina last night. But there is still a lot of anger and this can be used to good effect."
Maran was asked if Cagliari are now similar to Atalanta, in that opponents now study the team, thereby nullifying their strengths.
“The more attention that is paid to us, the more other teams will try to stop us. But it’s also true that in the last five or six games we have played in a different way on the pitch, but we are working on the details. We want to go beyond our limits.”
Claudio Ranieri has improved Sampdoria’s situation on the field, and Maran says they’re facing them at their best moment.
“We face them in their best moment. They have a great squad at their disposal and Ranieri have given them a real identity. We have to play a great game and be very attentive. Their position in the table isn’t justified. It’ll be a very difficult test.”
Cagliari face Sampdoria twice this week. The pair will meet again in the Coppa Italia on Thursday.
