Ivan Juric confessed Roma made Hellas Verona “pay for our mistakes” in a 3-1 home defeat, but the Giallorossi “changed to face us.”
Hellas put up quite a battle at the Bentegodi and had two goals disallowed, then a penalty awarded only to be revoked again because of an offside position.
With Justin Kluivert, Diego Perotti’s penalty and a late Henrikh Mkhitaryan tap-in, it’s the first time this season that Verona conceded more than two goals.
“We made a few mistakes and our opponents took advantage. We approached the game the way we wanted to, Roma changed to face us and ultimately the individual incidents were decisive,” Juric told Sky Sport Italia and Rai Sport.
“The lads played a great game, Roma have excellent players who made us pay for the errors. With the final goal, we were poured forward looking for the equaliser and lost our balance.
“When we are defending, it’s not to protect the goal so much as to get the ball back. That is our main aim.”
Despite the setback, they remain in a more than impressive eighth place in the Serie A table following promotion via the Serie B play-offs last summer.
“We mustn’t lose sight of who we are. Our ultimate target this season is to avoid relegation, so we want points anywhere we can get them.”
Giampaolo Pazzini came on as a late substitute, so will Verona try to sign a centre-forward in January?
“We have two games to play before the Christmas break against Atalanta and Torino, then we’ll evaluate the situation and see what we require on the market.”
