Claudio Ranieri was “amazed” by Sampdoria’s 4-3 defeat to Cagliari last night but felt the “last 15 minutes” cost them all three points.
Samp threw away a 3-1 lead deep in injury time, and Ranieri confessed to having “regrets” after the seven-goal thriller at the Sardegna Arena.
“Tonight was amazing. It’s a shame because we did everything right except for the last 15 minutes,” he told Sky Sport Italia.
“They were too alone in front of the goalkeeper. None of us went to stop our opponents.
“I told the team there were some regrets because, with three away goals, you can’t come home without any points.
“I always told them to stay close to their man when marking. In the end, it didn’t happen. I don’t know why; we will watch back these situations.
“We had a great match, just like we had prepared for, but we needed that ‘something extra’, like Cagliari had.”
Fabio Quagliarella scored twice on Monday night, however, and the former Roma boss was pleased to see him find the net after a particularly dry period for the veteran hitman.
“For a few weeks now, I’ve seen Quagliarella being very active on the training ground,” he added.
“I trusted him and his qualities. He couldn’t have forgotten how to score goals.”
The 68-year-old wrapped up by thanking Cagliari for giving him his break in management, describing his time at the club a “great experience”.
“I will be forever grateful to this club. They caught me after a game I had played against them. We won various promotions; it was a great experience.”
The result leaves Samp fourth from bottom in Serie A, and they face the Rossoblu again in the Coppa Italia on Thursday.
