Former Milan CEO Marco Fassone reveals they had already tried to sign Zlatan Ibrahimovic, while praising Gennaro Gattuso’s performances.

His tenure was short-lived under Yonghong Li and he was axed along with director of sport Massimiliano Mirabelli after the club was essentially repossessed by Elliot Management for unpaid loans.

“We had also suggested getting Ibrahimovic, and spoke to Mino Raiola at the time, but then we opted against it,” revealed Fassone on Tuttomercatoweb Radio.

“This could do with some stability, because too many changes in personnel both in the squad and on the bench creates instability. If they believe in these players, then they should keep going and earn their rewards over time.”

Gennaro Gattuso terminated his contract by mutual consent after missing out on the Champions League places by one point, but Milan are already on their second coach of the season after Stefano Pioli replaced Marco Giampaolo.

“I consider Rino to be an excellent coach who has qualities that go beyond his reputation of just being a gritty figure. He has excellent technical and tactical foundations, as well as being able to create an atmosphere where each player gives their all.

“Gattuso achieved strong results with a squad he did not put together and I hope he can soon get on to an important bench.

“Pioli found himself at Inter a few years ago and managed to turn a complex situation around. He is now in a similar position with Milan, but the pressure is on, being only four points away from the relegation zone.”
