Roma defender Chris Smalling hit out at the Corriere dello Sport for their “wrong and highly insensitive” headline about him and Romelu Lukaku.

The front page of the national sports paper was dedicated to tomorrow’s duel between Smalling and Inter striker Lukaku, with the headline: ‘Black Friday.’

Decried as racist by many, the editors continue to double down on their interpretation, complaining that those who call it racist “transform it into poison and have the poison inside them.”

Now Smalling himself has reacted via social media with a message to Corriere dello Sport editor Ivan Zazzaroni.

“Whilst I would have liked to spend the day focusing on the big game tomorrow, it is important that I acknowledge that what occurred this morning was wrong and highly insensitive.

“I hope the editors involved in running this headline take responsibility and understand the power they possess through words, and the impact those words can have.

“A big shout out to AS Roma for the support!

“Now let the battle commence Rom, daje Roma!”
