Parma boss Roberto D’Aversa didn’t expect his side to be this high up the Serie A table but denies they "won ugly" against Sampdoria.

The Gialloblu saw off Sampdoria at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris to record a 1-0 win that maintains their presence in the top half of the table.

"To be honest, no, I didn’t expect this. Yet I hoped we would be here, because I have seen the lads work very hard from the first day of their return in the summer," said the coach in his press conference.

“We have also lost important players, but in their absence and in difficult times this group has become truly united.

“We suffered in the last hour of the game today, but our boys were very good and brought home the result.”

Asked if Parma won ugly today, something that has often been said of the Ducali, D’Aversa disagreed with the premise.

“Explain to me, what is beautiful? We came to Marassi, where we are missing players and Antonino Barilla and Andreas Cornelius didn’t have 90 minutes in their legs.

“I say sorry, but this evening Parma were beautiful. Beauty is subjective and what counts in football is the result and the lads arrived there with fight.”

Next week will be a head-to-head for position, as Parma are level on 21 points with Napoli.

“We will go to Naples to face a strong team, even if they are in a moment of difficulty, and we’ll try to bring home a result.”
