Samir Handanovic maintains Inter “performances in the group games showed we deserved to go through, but we had ups and downs during the same match.”

The Nerazzurri knew they needed a win against the reshuffled Barcelona, who were already sure of first place, but wasted too many chances and were beaten 2-1 at San Siro.

As Borussia Dortmund beat Slavia Prague 2-1, they go through to the Champions League Round of 16, while Inter drop to the Europa League.

“We failed to score in the second half, although we had the chances. We knew Barcelona were dangerous on the counter, we got stretched out and it would get tougher as time wore on,” the captain told Sky Sport Italia.

“We gave our all, now we have to move forward. It is a defeat that hurts, but it’s not as if our season ends here. We have two Serie A games before the Christmas break, then can recharge our batteries.”

Inter ultimately wasted their chances of qualification by throwing away leads, above all when 2-0 up at Borussia Dortmund only to lose 3-2.

“Our performances in the group games showed we deserved to go through, but unfortunately we had some ups and downs during the same match.”
