It is the first time the Aquile have been eliminated in the group stage of this tournament since 2009.

The Biancocelesti lost four of their six group games and knew this evening they could only qualify with a victory and Celtic beating Cluj.

“Our qualification was not decided in Rennes,” Inzaghi told Sky Sport Italia.

“We should’ve done better in the other games, but even then didn’t get the results we deserved. It was not an easy group, because Rennes and Celtic are strong, but it was Cluj who went through. Our regrets are based on other matches rather than this one.

“Even tonight, we should’ve done better in the first half. Once we found out Celtic weren’t putting up a fight in Romania, our qualification was doomed anyway and we lost intensity.”

When asked if he regretted rotating the squad so much in the Europa League to focus on Serie A, the coach remained adamant.

“I would make the same choices again. It is my duty to use all the players I have. I received some good responses, others not so good. You can’t play the same men every three days, it’s just not practical.”
