Atalanta captain Alejandro Gomez will be made an honorary citizen of Bergamo for helping the club progress in the Champions League.

Atalanta qualified for the last 16 in their first-ever Champions League campaign with a 3-0 win against Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday, making sure Christmas came early in Bergamo this year.

A lot of that was down to Gomez, who has been instrumental in the Dea’s rise since arriving from Metalist Kharkiv in 2014.

Bergamo city council announced on Friday he would receive honorary citizenship for “having given importance to Bergamo in Europe, distinguishing himself as a professional, rejecting other offers to commit to Atalanta’s cause.”

The Argentine forward will be awarded the title on Monday December 23 at the Teatro Sociale di Bergamo.

It comes just five months after coach Gian Piero Gasperini was similarly made an honorary citizen for bringing Champions League football to Atalanta.
