With Sampdoria’s last-gasp victory in the Derby della Lanterna yesterday, Claudio Ranieri has made Serie A history by becoming the first coach to win all four of Italy’s biggest derbies.

Ranieri added a victory in the Genoese clash to go alongside scalps in the Milan, Rome and Turin derbies.

Not only has the 68-year-old won in each of the four derbies, but he’s remarkably also remained unbeaten.

Ranieri’s first experience of the four major derbies in the peninsula was the Derby della Mole between Juventus and Torino.

Ranieri recorded a double over Toro in 2008-09, winning both games 1-0.

His next was the Derby della Capitale after becoming Roma coach in September 2009.

Ranieri won four consecutive games in the Roman derby in 2009-10 and 2010-11 before resigning in February 2011.

He then became Inter boss later in the same year, replacing Gian Piero Gasperini only a month into the 2011-12 season.

Ranieri only took charge for one Derby della Madonnina, but again emerged victorious with a 1-0 win in January 2012 thanks to a goal from Diego Milito.

Last night’s win, thanks to Manolo Gabbiadini, has now completed the set for the Rome-native.

However, Ranieri has an even further remarkable record outside of the big four in Italy.

In his single season at Atletico Madrid, in 1999-00, Ranieri’s side defeated Real in the Madrid derby at the Santiago Bernabeu. A brace from Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and future Milan striker Jose Mari secured a 3-1 win. Ranieri was sacked two weeks before the return fixture took place in March 2000.

At Valencia, Ranieri again remained undefeated in the derby with Levante, picking up a 2-1 win in January 2005.

Ranieri also has a very good record in lesser-known derbies.

At Fiorentina, Ranieri recorded a double over Bologna in the 1996-97 season in the Derby dell’Appennino.

In the Derby della Sole, played between Roma and Napoli, Ranieri, who coached both sides, went undefeated with the latter from 1991-93, but suffered three defeats as boss of the former.

In his time as Chelsea boss from 2000-04, he failed to register a single league victory against Arsenal in the London derby, with his only win against the Gunners coming in the Champions League quarter final second leg in April 2004.

Ranieri did better in the West London derby against Fulham, remaining undefeated in seven games during his stay at Stamford Bridge.

He then briefly took charge of Fulham in 2018-19 and lost in his single encounter against his old side in December 2018.
