Simone Inzaghi wants to see "a reaction" from Lazio against fourth-placed Cagliari on Monday evening after an early Europa League exit. “We had a duty to advance.”
Inzaghi's men travel to Sardinia to play Cagliari in the Monday night game, which kicks off at 19:45 GMT. You can read the match preview here.
The Biancocelesti lost 2-0 to French side Rennes, the first time they haven’t qualified from their Europa League group since 2009-10.
“The team has had a good week after beating Juventus. In between we had the trip to Rennes, but we knew that our journey was difficult. Unlike in previous years we were not able to advance in the Europa League," said the coach in his press conference.
“We are Lazio and we had a duty to progress to the next round. I want a reaction tomorrow.”
Lazio face a Cagliari side that hasn’t lost in over three months, as it is a head-to-head between third and fourth.
“I expect a very difficult match because we face a team that is doing very well. I will not just talk about enthusiasm, because Cagliari also has a lot of quality.
“They have proved that they can make life difficult for any opponent this season.”
Inzaghi was asked whether he believes Lazio have made a leap in quality this season, as they sit third in the table.
“Even when results weren’t coming, the lads have always put in good performances. Now we are collecting what we’re producing and we have to continue to believe in what we are doing, knowing what our potential is.”
Senad Lulic, Marco Parolo and Francesco Acerbi are on four yellow cards and run the risk of being suspended for the Italian Super Cup against Juve next week, so will that play into Inzaghi’s team selection?
“It doesn’t condition my thinking, our only thoughts are on the game against Cagliari. After this game, we will think about the Super Cup.”
