Andrea Petagna’s penalty had given them the half-time lead at the Stadio Olimpico, but it was all turned around after the break by Lorenzo Pellegrini, Diego Perotti and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

There had been reports Semplici would be fired if he lost again, but Sky Sport Italia suggest the club is sticking with the man who took them from Serie C to the top flight.

“When you are bottom of the table, it’s only natural some stories will be in the papers,” said Semplici in his press conference.

“I have not received any communication. Until I hear otherwise, I remain the coach of SPAL. I am convinced, with my staff and players, that despite a new negative performances and injuries, we can get out of this situation. The lads proved it today. I continue along my path.

“We had a few issues, missing some key players, but we can get ourselves out of this situation. It was a good first half performance, we had two or three important chances, but unfortunately we were naïve on the penalty.

“If you give any advantage to players of Roma’s quality, then of course they are going to turn it around. When you manage to take the lead, you have to be smarter than that.”
