Gigi Riva has officially been named Honorary President of Cagliari in the club’s centenary year and marking the 50th anniversary of his Scudetto win.

The legend of Sardinian football was formally handed the role by President Tommaso Giulini, while his son Nicola Riva has also joined the Board of Directors.

“He is the history of Cagliari, so it seemed the most natural move to celebrate the anniversaries that arrive this season,” said Giulini at the press conference.

“He is the history of Cagliari, so it seemed the most natural move to celebrate the anniversaries that arrive this season,” said Giulini at the press conference.

“Gigi wants to be considered Cagliari’s first fan, it’s really just a way of staying closer to us and marking 50 years since the Scudetto. I wasn’t even born in 1970, but I think Gigi accepted this role for the fans. It is an honour and we thank him for all he has done for this club.”

Cagliari have also made other changes to the board, promoting Fedele Usai, CEO of Conde Nast, to the role of vice-president alongside Stefano Filucchi.
