Guangzhou Evergrande coach Fabio Cannavaro has reiterated his desire to work in Europe and is hopeful Gennaro Gattuso will “lift” Napoli.

The World Cup winner has had an adventurous time in Chinese football so far, coming back from a suspension to guide Evergrande to the League title earlier this month.

However, he made it clear his time in the Far East was a stepping stone to eventually returning to Europe.

“My goal is to find my way back to Europe, to measure myself against the best, but I have to be ready and therefore gain experience,” Cannavaro told Sky Sport Italia.

“I’m paying my dues. I got my B licence in China, I got a team promoted and then won the title with one. Now, I can fight to win something.

“China has been a fantastic experience. Chinese football is different, where you don’t have the same intensity and technique that you find in Europe, but in the Champions League you face some strong opponents.

“It was a season of change, the club relied on a lot of young players and the goal was to end among the top six. Instead, we won the championship.”

“Now the hardest part will come because, when you win, you then have to reconfirm yourselves.”

The former Napoli defender has been following the situation at the San Paolo this season, and he is backing new boss and ex-Italy teammate Gattuso to get them back to the top.

“I’ve heard him speak. He has great desire and great determination, and he is a lad who likes to work, he has clear ideas and won’t break down.

“We hope he can lift Napoli again.”
