“I saw a Fiorentina side that pushed all the way, was right in the game up until the third goal, with a little more luck could’ve turned it around,” Montella told Sky Sport Italia.

“The players ran to the end, we had started better and conceded two goals in quick succession. When you face players with this experience and temperament, they will slow the tempo and take the sting out of your game.

“The scoreline was very harsh, but we did see some differences in quality on the pitch tonight. The differences were pretty evident, including the players who can come off the bench.

“Every time we seem to find the right balance, we lose players to injury. Some of the midfielders are also visibly falling back on a physical level.”

Montella didn’t even wait for the inevitable question about his future and the decisions of President Rocco Commisso.

“I know you’re going to ask if I will still be there after Christmas, I cannot know that. If the club hasn’t done anything so far, it might be because they believe in what we are doing.

“Fiorentina don’t deserve to be in the current position, I believe we can do better with these players, but we had more or less everything happen to us over the last few months. We can do better, but we also have some pretty strong alibis.

“I am very proud if the club and squad has faith in me, but I know what this profession is like. You need quality to win the games and we have only so much available right now.

“I said in August that you have to look at the squad, see the number of goals they have in their careers, then analyse what the realistic expectations will be.”
