Davide Ballardini has reportedly rejected an offer to return to Genoa, who could now move for Diego Lopez or Aurelio Andreazzoli.

Thiago Motta headed for the winter break with back-to-back losses against Sampdoria and Inter, and the 4-0 defeat at San Siro could be his last at the helm.

Genoa are bottom of Serie A after 17 games and Gianluca Di Marzio reports President Enrico Preziosi reached out to Ballardini about a fourth spell in charge.

The 55-year-old was in charge at the Marassi for seven months in 2010-11, six months of the 2012-13 season and almost a year from November 2017, before he was sacked to make way for Ivan Juric in October 2018.

However, Calciomercato.com claims he has turned down the opportunity of a return to the Rossoblu’s bench.

It is alleged Ballardini wanted Preziosi to issue a public apology for his scathing criticism before possibly taking the job.

CM now expects the Grifone to turn their attentions towards Lopez, who is currently working in his native Uruguay for Penarol.

The former Cagliari defender led Penarol to the Uruguayan title last season but has been sacked in all three of his Serie A roles so far – at Bologna, Palermo and with the Sardinians.

Alternatively, the website suggests they could opt to bring back Andreazzoli, who was dismissed earlier in the season and is therefore still on their payroll.
