Javier Zanetti claims Inter “knew” Lautaro Martinez would work well with Romelu Lukaku and that the club “hope to reach” the Europa League Final.

Lautaro only played in Mauro Icardi’s absence last season but has stepped up under Antonio Conte, forging a prolific partnership with Lukaku, who became Inter’s record signing last summer.

“Lautaro is doing important things,” Zanetti, now the Nerazzurri’s Vice-President, told TyC Sports.

“What he’s shown has been very good and he has a great future. He’s only 22 years old but still has a lot more to give and is on the right track.

“We’re happy to have him and he’s happy to wear the Inter shirt. We knew he would become the player he is now.

“He’s fit in well alongside Lukaku, thanks to the work of the coach. Icardi is also an important striker.

“When we decided to sign Lukaku, we knew he could fit in well with our coach’s idea. The present with Lautaro and Lukaku is very positive.

“This is an important year for us, a new chapter has begun with Antonio Conte. We want to show that we’re contenders for the title.

“Antonio’s a coach with a lot of character and experience, and things are going very well right now.”

The only blemish on the Beneamata’s season so far has been their exit from the Champions League group stage…

“We’re still only halfway through the season, but we want to compete in Serie A, the Coppa Italia and Europa League in order to be leading lights, and we want to pick up good results.

“The Champions League left some bitterness, above all, for how it ended. We were in a complicated group and we had good games against Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund.

“Now we have to do well in the Europa League, which is always an important competition: we hope to reach the Final.

Juventus have a very competitive team and have many options in their squad. For now, results are helping us, with a coach who knows Italian football very well.

“Fans, like in all other parts of the world, want to win right away, but it takes time when you’re still developing as a team.

“We must give our coach time to pass his ideas onto the players. I’m sure the work we’re doing will pay off.”
