“The team is here, we’ve got time to turn the situation around, the coach has experience and we need the right mentality,” Behrami told Sky Sport Italia.

“I realise our position in the table could create a sense of anxiety, but that would be damaging and we have to take it one game at a time.”

This is the debut under Nicola, the third Genoa coach of the season so far, as Aurelio Andreazzoli was fired on October 22 and Thiago Motta also saw the exit over the Christmas break.

“We’ve worked well with the coach over the last few days and are trying to introduce his concepts. I had some of my best performances of the last few years with Nicola at Udinese and I know he can instil a real desire to sacrifice ourselves, work for the team and give everything with great determination.

“Perhaps that is why Nicola wanted me here, as I know what he wants from his team and how to pass that on to the other players.”
