Berardi ban, Lazio racism fine

Sassuolo star Domenico Berardi is given a two-match ban for insulting officials, while Lazio are initially fined €20,000 for racist abuse of Mario Balotelli.

The Lega Serie A Disciplinary Commission gave its verdicts after the Week 18 round of games.

Berardi was sent off after the final whistle of Sassuolo’s controversial 2-1 defeat to Genoa, as the referee’s report confirms he made “gravely offensive” comments to one of the officials in the tunnel back to the dressing rooms.

He has been handed a two-match ban.

Inter will miss both Nicolò Barella and Milan Skriniar for this weekend’s clash with Atalanta, as they accumulated yellow cards resulting in a ban.

Suspended for one game are Andrea Cistana (Brescia), Nenad Tomovic (SPAL), Antonino Barillà (Parma), Omar Colley (Sampdoria), Fabio Depaoli (Sampdoria), Manuel Locatelli (Sassuolo), Marco Parolo (Lazio) and Sandro Tonali (Brescia).

As for supporters, Lazio have been fined €20,000 for racist chants aimed at Brescia striker Balotelli during Sunday’s game at the Rigamonti.

There were also other non-racist, but certainly offensive, chants targeting the Italy international later in the game, which prompted the referee to stop play for a couple of minutes so a statement could be read out over the speaker.

This is only an initial fine, pending further investigation of the precise sector the chants came from, as well as working with Lazio to identify and punish those supporters responsible.

Lazio were also separately fined €2,000 for a plastic bottle thrown on to the pitch.

SPAL were fined €10,000 for insulting chants aimed at the referee as well as “a fruit peel that struck the referee on the head, without causing injury.”

The fine was reduced because the club worked with the police to identify those responsible.

Juventus were fined €5,000 for allowing a pitch invader, Genoa fined €4,000 when someone threw a lighter on to the pitch, without striking the officials, again lessened by their collaboration to find the individual.
