The rumours have circulated for a few months in the Italian and German media, suggesting Rangnick would be given carte blanche to act as coach, director of sport and lead the transfer strategy.

“I have never had contact with Milan,” he told Calciomercato.it.

“When I was at the start of my career, I did look to the Rossoneri with great admiration. It was the 1980s and Arrigo Sacchi created a team capable of dominating European football for a long time.

“They played exactly the kind of football I loved, and are probably the team and coach who most influenced the development of my career.”

Rangnick is currently working as a director for the Red Bull franchises at Salzburg and Leipzig.

“I am content with my current role, but in football, you can never say never. I am young enough to get back into coaching.”
