This was their 10th consecutive Serie A victory, a new all-time club record beating the nine set by Sven-Goran Eriksson in 1998-99.

“I thought we played better in the first half, then Napoli were stronger after the break, so it was a balanced encounter and all came down to the goal,” Inzaghi told Sky Sport Italia.

Can it be a fluke that the Aquile are so regularly scoring late goals to secure victories?

“I think it’s all down to the work we did in pre-season, which I thought was fantastic. We started by dropping a few points in Serie A and the Europa League, but we were playing our game and doing what we asked in training.

“So the lads realised their coach was calm and reassured, despite a few critics and some disappointing results, because we all believed in what we were doing and thought the results would come.

“I didn’t think we’d win 10 in a row, but I saw good things! I’ve been complimenting my players for the last three months and telling them to focus on the next match, so I won’t change the message now.

“Napoli have had some problems, but they remain a great team and have so much talent at their disposal, this shouldn’t be taken for granted.”

Inzaghi was asked what Lazio are missing before they can make a Scudetto push.

“In previous years, we’ve always come close to our objectives and missed something right at the end, for example missing out on the Champions League in the last game.

“I have to make the most of the players at my disposal and I am constantly in contact with the club, we are all vigilant on the transfer market if there is a good opportunity. At the same time, these lads have given us their all and we want to keep everyone involved.”

If Inter and Juventus both lose this weekend, Lazio could in theory be joint Winter Champions, as they have a game in hand to play with Hellas Verona in February.
