Semplici: 'SPAL not at Milan level'

Leonardo Semplici concedes SPAL had little chance of getting past Milan in the Coppa Italia Round of 16. “There were completely different quality levels.”

Krzysztof Piatek, Samu Castillejo and Theo Hernandez made it a comfortable 3-0 result at San Siro.

“The two teams had completely different quality levels, we were in an emergency situation and ended up giving a debut to a player born in 2001,” said the coach in his press conference.

“We did all that we possibly could, but made some banal errors and that made everything even more difficult. We knew that it would’ve required a miracle to get through this round and we were unable to achieve it.

“You can sense the renewed enthusiasm around the Milan squad.”

Nenad Tomovic limped off during the second half and is now a major doubt to feature at the weekend in Serie A.

“Tomovic suffered a potentially serious ankle sprain and we’ll evaluate it tomorrow morning. Bryan Dabo had not played for six months, but I wanted to give him a chance to get some playing time in his legs, his performance was more than adequate. Alberto Paloschi put in a lot of effort, but not enough quality.”
