Ciro Immobile insists Lazio are not looking at a Scudetto push yet, but he would love to beat Gonzalo Higuain’s all-time Serie A scoring record.
The forward hit a hat-trick in this afternoon’s 5-1 victory over Sampdoria, taking him to 23 in 19 games, plus six assists.
“We wanted to start the second half of the season well and mustn’t underestimate any opposition, especially as Sampdoria were on good form,” the striker told Sky Sport Italia.
“We did well to get the game immediately on the right track. I thank my teammates for putting me in the condition to score, as it is always credit to them too.”
The Biancocelesti celebrated their 11th consecutive Serie A victory, something Lazio had never done before.
“It’s important to keep our feet firmly on the ground and not make any Icarus-like flights of fancy, that’s what we always say to each other every day in training.
“Our objective is to keep going as we are and qualify for the Champions League. If we’re still up there with only seven-eight rounds left, then we can start thinking about something else, but for now it’s the top four.”
Immobile has 23 goals in just 19 Serie A games, so is on track to beat Gonzalo Higuain’s all-time Serie A record of 36 for Napoli in 2015-16.
“Only Pipita achieved that record, so it’s tough, but with these teammates, this crowd and this attitude, I can hopefully keep scoring goals.”
