Roberto De Zerbi was above all pleased that Sassuolo defeated Torino with “heart and determination, not just beautiful football.”
The Neroverdi were coming off three consecutive Serie A defeats and went behind after 20 minutes, but Jeremie Boga scored one and set up the other for Domenico Berardi to turn it around and win 2-1.
“We are happy to have deservedly won this game, whereas in the other matches we had some setbacks and the tension level was high. Today showed us again that we have to suffer in order to get victories, as nothing comes for free,” the coach told Sky Sport Italia.
“We, like every team in the world, need a player like Berardi or Boga who can shift the momentum of a game.”
Torino threatened an equaliser too, as Vincenzo Millico’s curler bounced off the crossbar.
“I’ve been telling the team for a while that you need more than beautiful football to win. Over the last two-three months, our football has been very good for long periods, but then we slipped up in naïve situations and had to deal with injuries, so were always missing something.
“This victory feels even better than a 3-0 or 4-0 result, because we showed heart to fight back and that’s something we haven’t done enough this season. I hope we can always play with that kind of determination and not just when we go behind.
“Boga scored a goal and provided an assist, so that’s what a coach wants to see. Having said that, when you run at players one-on-one, you have to do it in a certain way and we’ve got a few players who like to surge forward from the back. I just wish he'd always play like that, but I realise with young players, you need a little more patience.”
