The Granata had yet again taken the lead through Tomas Rincon’s deflected effort, but threw it away in the final half-hour with Jeremie Boga and Domenico Berardi goals.

“It was different to previous games, as against Bologna we were tired after the Coppa Italia and ran out of steam. Today we should not have fallen away physically, so I have to talk to the lads and find out what happened.

“We were suffering, struggling to pass our way out from the back and kept losing the ball on the edge of the box,” the coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“Simone Verdi also felt the psychological blow of that big chance to make it 2-0 on the stroke of half-time, so I tried to introduce some fresh legs in Diego Laxalt.

“What I do not like to see is that when we lose the ball, we don’t counter, we don’t play our way out, we just get stuck there and are under constant pressure.

“We had the chances to score even more, but ultimately didn’t allow Sassuolo clear-cut opportunities. They equalised with a goal out of nowhere, a stunning Boga strike from a huge distance into the top corner. Then they rode the wave of euphoria to turn it around.

“I think if you analyse all the chances, it should at least have been a draw, if not our victory. Sassuolo are very dangerous on the counter-attack, we know that, so shouldn’t gift them the opportunities to use those strengths.

“Sassuolo are a good opponent, there’s no shame losing here, but it hurts because we were in front and on a good period of form.”

Torino youth team striker Vincenzo Millico came off the bench and almost scored a spectacular equaliser with his curler off the bar.

“There is the temptation to use him from the start, because he is truly promising, but has a lot to learn.”
