Bologna assistant manager Emilio De Leo revealed why Sinisa Mihajlovic was initially not on the bench and his knack for substitutes against SPAL.
The Rossoblu fought back from an Andrea Petagna penalty to win the local derby 3-1 in Ferrara.
“We showed the right attitude to react and turn the situation around, as the lads immediately focused and realised what needed to be done,” said De Leo in his press conference.
Coach Mihajlovic watched the first half from the stands, as he is still in recovery after a bone marrow transplant and chemotherapy.
“It was raining quite heavily in the first half and there wasn’t much coverage on the bench, so it was best he stay somewhere warmer. As soon as the rain eased off, we couldn’t stop him anymore and he catapulted himself to the touchline!”
Mihajlovic has become something of a prophet when it comes to substitutions, as Musa Barrow came off the bench and scored 90 seconds later.
“He likes to take the credit for knowing when substitutes will score. When they don’t, it’s our fault!” laughed De Leo.
“Barrow came on with the right determination and in a position that really suits him. It has been a troubled year, but we don’t hold back when we need to take the initiative in a game and must not set ourselves limits. We are glad to give this victory to the fans.”
