Genoa director of sport Francesco Marroccu insists they “never put Domenico Criscito on the transfer market” and have no Juan Manuel Iturbe regrets.

The Grifone were very active in the final days of the January window, but there was some tension when Criscito reportedly turned down a bid from Fiorentina.

There were suggestions in the media that the captain was furious at being pushed out by his beloved club.

“It was not in any way unusual, as many Genoa players are desired by big clubs,” said Marroccu in a press conference.

“It was not in any way unusual, as many Genoa players are desired by big clubs,” said Marroccu in a press conference.

“The fact is that Mimmo Criscito was not put on the transfer market by Genoa. He received a very determined proposal from Fiorentina and the Viola kept pushing for some time. There’s nothing else to it.”

There was another strange story in the Genoa camp, when Iturbe flew in from Mexico for a medical, then failed to agree terms.

It was reported this was due to an issue with the third-party ownership status, something that has scuppered previous moves to Serie A.

“These things happen on the transfer market, as you have to keep several negotiations going to then finish the most functional ones. In the case of Iturbe, we had many objectives and I’d prefer to talk about those that did go through, such as Iago Falque from Torino.”

Iturbe did leave Pumas in the end, signing for Pachuca instead.
