The Blucerchiati showed great fight to come back from 2-0 down after 16 minutes to draw 2-2, but after losing Fabio Quagliarella to injury, Napoli took control and emerged 4-2 winners.

“We played against a very good Napoli side. After the two goals, we changed to three midfielders and took control of the game,” Ranieri told Sky Sport Italia.

“I think we did a great deal after that and Napoli did fairly little, but when you make mistakes, these are players who will force you to pay for those errors.

“Quagliarella and Gaston Ramirez have a lot of quality, so naturally, they are sorely missed. Unfortunately, I am always forced to make substitutions due to injuries and can never play all the cards I want to off the bench.

“Fabio’s goal was a gem, it’s just a pity that it is ‘wasted’ in a defeat.”

Remarkably, Quagliarella’s volley on 26 minutes was the first goal Samp have scored all season in the opening half-hour of their Serie A matches.

“We certainly don’t start games in the right way and need to work on that, but we recovered and took the initiative. We knew the triangles Napoli would create with their passing, it’s just that we were second to the ball.

“This is a team that has to be permanently concentrated, because the moment we get distracted, we concede. We’re still barely afloat, so we have to fight hard to keep our heads above water.”
