The Nerazzurri have a huge opportunity to catch leaders Juventus at the top of the table after the Bianconeri lost 2-1 at Hellas Verona on Saturday evening.

Lautaro Martinez and Alessandro Bastoni are suspended, with Stefano Sensi and Roberto Gagliardini not 100 per cent fit.

Handanovic is increasingly unlikely to feature, even with the aid of a protective glove, as he didn’t train with the ball on Saturday either.

The goalkeeper suffered a hairline fracture to the little finger in his left hand and there is the very real risk of doing further damage if he plays.

As Tommaso Berni is also banned after a red card from the bench for dissent, the only available option in goal is Daniele Padelli.

He featured in last week’s 2-0 win away to Udinese, but that was his first Serie A appearance since August 2016.

Diego Godin is the favourite rather than Danilo D’Ambrosio to replace Bastoni in defence.

There could be some changes upfront in the absence of Lautaro Martinez, as it’s reported Eriksen will be given a free role in support of Romelu Lukaku.

That would allow Marcelo Brozovic, returning to the starting XI from injury, to control the midfield, while Alexis Sanchez can come off the bench in the second half to provide fresh legs.

Milan are also planning a similar adjustment, in this case allowing Hakan Calhanoglu to roam behind centre-forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Ibra and Simon Kjaer return after missing the 1-1 draw with Hellas Verona while suffering from flu symptoms, and Ismael Bennacer’s ban has expired.

Rade Krunic has been ruled out for a month with a stress fracture to his foot, but Andrea Conti is more likely than Davide Calabria to play at right-back.

Stefano Pioli has a few different options open to him, as Rafael Leao or Ante Rebic could act as strike partners to Ibrahimovic.

Rebic’s versatility could come in handy, as the Croatian can work on the left flank, so the 4-4-1-1 mutates into a 4-3-3 when attacking.

Giacomo Bonaventura is another wild card, as he can play on the left side of midfield or in the Calhanoglu ‘free’ role behind the forward.

Probable line-ups:

Inter (3-5-1-1): Padelli; D’Ambrosio, De Vrij, Skriniar; Candreva, Vecino, Brozovic, Barella, Young; Eriksen; Lukaku

Milan (4-4-1-1): G Donnarumma; Conti, Musacchio, Romagnoli, Theo Hernandez; Castillejo, Kessie, Bennacer, Bonaventura; Calhanoglu; Ibrahimovic
