The incident occurred during Napoli’s 3-2 home defeat to Lecce, when the result was still 2-1 to the visitors.

Milik went over in the box, flailing somewhat after Fabio Lucioni made contact with his ankle, and was booked for simulation.

“We clearly saw the touch. The referee said that Milik accentuated the touch and therefore was booked, but we have VAR and need to use the technology. This is unacceptable,” Giuntoli told Sky Sport Italia.

“The referee is convinced he dived. The fact VAR is there and he wouldn’t go to look at it is unacceptable. We’ve already seen VAR not used properly this season.

“I don’t know if the VAR urged the referee to view it again, but the fact play was stopped for several minutes suggests they really did.

“We as a club want the situation to be clarified. Milik accentuated the touch, fine, but the referee still can’t ignore the existence of VAR on this.”
