Fabio Cannavaro has claimed Inter would have qualified for the last 16 in the Champions League with their current squad.
The former Italy international praised the former Juventus hero and now Inter coach Antonio Conte, who has brought the Nerazzurri back to fight for the Scudetto in Italy.
“Before, everyone was talking about Antonio Conte as an added value, but since January, the club has strengthened the team a lot,” Cannavaro told the Gazzetta dello Sport. “Now, the only difference will be to keep the consistency in their performances.
“Inter are acquiring that. If he had these players during last summer, Antonio wouldn’t have failed to qualify for the last 16 of the Champions League.
“It’s too bad, but they are in the Scudetto race and fighting for the other Cups. A win like they had in the derby, lifts the group and the confidence in the work of Conte.
Juventus are only behind Inter on goal difference and there are already great expectations ahead of a direct clash between the two sides on March 1.
Despite recognising that the match could be important ahead of a exciting run-in, Cannavaro doesn’t think it would “decide anything”.
“I’m convinced that you can’t decide anything with a match in March,” he said. “The distance is minimal and fortunately the ending hasn’t been written yet, like it has been during the recent years.
“The team who come out as winners that evening, will of course have the confidence to push for the title.”
