“The Scudetto dream started from half-time against Atalanta,” the midfielder told Sky Sport Italia, referring to a comeback from 3-0 down to draw 3-3 in October.

“We didn’t talk about it too much, because we knew what needed to be done, but the coach said two or three words that changed everything in our minds. We came out for the second half and did what we did. We haven’t looked back since.”

The Aquile are unbeaten in 18 rounds and sit one point behind joint leaders Inter and Juventus.

“The Scudetto isn’t something in our minds too much, but seeing as we are up there, we may as well go for it. Nobody is expecting or obliging us to win the title. The objective remains Champions League qualification and we’ll give everything we have to stay up there.

“If it does go the way I hope it does, then there’s room for me to add a new tattoo to my hand so I can mark the occasion…”

Lazio and Inter had regularly clashed for fourth place in recent years, but this time it’s a showdown for the top spot.

“Inter are a strong team, they have many big name players and winning the derby will have boosted their confidence. However, we are on home turf, have to be really determined from the first minute and then see what happens.”

Milinkovic-Savic was repeatedly linked with a move away to Lazio, with Inter, Juventus, Real Madrid and Manchester United interested.

“My playing style has changed and I am a little deeper now, help out the defence more, but I like the new role. The coach asked what he wants of me and I am happy to give it to him.

“Of course, at the start I wouldn’t have thought of being at this stage, but we grew slowly and changed mentality. Now we are more of a family, there are lads who have been here for a long time and settled in well, even better than in previous seasons.”
