Roma defender Chris Smalling says “recent results haven’t been good enough” ahead of their Europa League Round of 32 tie against Gent.
The Giallorossi have lost their last three consecutive games in Serie A, as they welcome Belgian side Gent to the Stadio Olimpico tomorrow, and Smalling says they need to do more.
“Our results recently haven’t been good enough, but this week we have two home games in quick succession and we have the chance to make sure they go well and give us a kickstart to ensure the next few months are much better,” said Smalling in the pre-game press conference.
“Obviously we are going through a very tough period but as players we know we are the only ones that can get us out of this.
“We are all working hard to improve, individually and as a collective.”
The Giallorossi have lost to Sassuolo, Bologna and to Atalanta in recent weeks, but Smalling says the team are together.
“You can see how hard everyone works; in the gym, on the training pitch, in analysis.
“We have 20 players who all want to play on Thursday, everyone is itching to get out there and prove themselves.”
Smalling is on loan at Roma from Manchester United, but wouldn’t be drawn on the conversation of his future.
“To be honest my focus is only on results. I am very comfortable at Roma. The city is fantastic and the club have welcome me very well.
“I don’t want distractions now and divert attention from the results.”
Roma have been in talks with American company The Friedkin Group over a proposed takeover, has talk of the club switching hands affected the players?
“No, absolutely not. Personally I knew little about it and in the locker room not much is said. Our attention is focused only on the pitch.”
