Papu Gomez said Atalanta “knew how to hurt” Valencia, but regrets taking a few too many risks in the 4-1 Champions League triumph.
It was an almost perfect first leg performance at San Siro in their debut Champions League Round of 16, rushing into a 4-0 lead with Hans Hateboer’s brace, Josip Ilicic and Remo Freuler scorchers.
The late Denis Cheryshev away goal leaves some anxiety for the second leg, which will be at the Mestalla on March 10.
“We knew where to hurt them and how to play this game, we’d prepared well, it was not dissimilar to the one against Roma,” Papu told Sky Sport Italia.
“With the situations we had, we could’ve scored more, but it was a wonderful night. To be honest, I didn’t expect all these people to be here from Bergamo, it’s fantastic, unique and will remain with us for all our lives.
“Perhaps at times the team exaggerates in wanting to play the ball and takes a few too many risks, so we really could’ve done without conceding that away goal.”
