Former Milan director of sport Massimiliano Mirabelli has criticised Paolo Maldini, saying “those who have played at the highest levels are not necessarily capable of being directors.”

Mirabelli was director of sport at the Rossoneri for just over a year, but was ousted in the summer of 2018 as Li Yonghong lost control of the club due to defaulting on a €300m loan from Elliott Management.

Mirabelli spoke to Calciotoday.it about the current iteration of the club, and had some stern words for Rossoneri legend Paolo Maldini.

Mirabelli spoke to Calciotoday.it about the current iteration of the club, and had some stern words for Rossoneri legend Paolo Maldini.

“Those who have played at the very highest levels are not necessarily capable of being directors," said Mirabelli.

“Paolo is at the beginning and is working hard. He will need time to gain confidence in the job.”

Mirabelli’s spending spree in the summer of 2017 was over €200m, an amount the club is still struggling with today.

“People who say I put the club in financial difficulty is said by those who don’t know the facts.

“We had to create a new team in only one transfer window, we had to buy ten players.

“We renewed Gianluigi Donnarumma’s contract, and with an agent like Mino Raiola, that isn’t easy.

“This has benefitted the club today. I want to see now if and how Donnarumma’s contract will be extended.

“Then we launched Rino Gattuso as coach.”
