Henrikh Mkhitaryan insists that Roma “believe in fourth place” this season but they will not get carried away after the 4-0 win against Lecce on Sunday.
After a run of five games without a win, including the elimination from the Coppa Italia last month, the Giallorossi have now secured back-to-back wins and clean sheets in the Europa League and in Serie A.
They are currently three points behind fourth-placed Atalanta in the table and Mkhitaryan hasn’t given up on a place in the Champions League next year.
“It was an important win to get some confidence back for the next games,” he told Roma TV. “It wasn’t easy, we need to get back our faith in the League.
“We believe in fourth place, of course. But we have to take one game at a time and remain concentrated.
“We can’t think that there are 13 games left, now we are playing against Gent [in the Europa League] and then Cagliari.
The Armenia international scored the second goal of the match against Lecce and played the full 90 minutes at the Olimpico yesterday and has vowed to put his head down and “work to improve” even further.
“The team has regained confidence with these two wins, but we must always work to improve,” he added. “We never stop improving, we must be ready to adapt ahead of every opponent.”
The Giallorossi are 1-0 up after the first game against KAA Gent in the round of 32 in the Europa League and will travel to Belgium on Thursday to play for a spot in the last 16 of the competition.
