Franco Carraro, the former President of FIGC and CONI, would suggest playing the upcoming Serie A fixtures “behind closed doors”.

Italy's Prime minister Giuseppe Conte confirmed yesterday that they “will evaluate” postponing all this week’s matches due to the Coronavirus outbreak.

The former FIGC chief Carraro feels that the games should go ahead as planned but recognises that it’s a “delicate” moment for Italy as a whole.

“Until Friday, Italy thought they had control, then it turned into total chaos,” the former FIGC President told Radio Anch’io Sport. “The decisions will be taken by the Italian government, with the regions and the Mayors.

“It’s a delicate moment, there’s no doubt about that. The world of sport can’t think that it won’t be affected by this phenomenon.”

But Carraro still claims that the games should go as planned and said the best solution would be to play the games behind closed doors.

“I would decide that the games would be played, then withing 48 hours it must be decided whether to play them behind closed doors or not,” he added. “To take away the audience would take away something that is part of the show and the home team would lose their advantage, but I think it’s the lesser evil.

“In the case of games being played behind closed doors, the sports authorities could speak with those who hold the rights to show the game and allow those who doesn’t have the subscription to be able to stay at home and watch the game.”
