The former Lazio and Inter coach has brought the optimism back in Italy and has insisted that he doesn’t think too much about the future, other than the trophies he wants to win.

“I haven’t thought about the future yet,” he told Esquire. “At the moment, my goal is to bring a win in the European Championship and a World Cup back to Italy.”

Gian Piero Ventura ended his tenure as Italy CT with the monumental feat of failing to qualify for the World Cup and Roberto Mancini was later handed the task of putting the pieces back together.

“It was not easy,” Mancini said. “We came from the failure of not qualifying for the World Cup, something that has never happened for as far as I can remember in the last 50 years.”

And he is right, because it was the first time Italy failed to qualify for the World Cup in 60 years, but Mancini has warned his team that they haven’t done anything yet.

“But we decided to give space to the young players who, with some more experienced players, wanted to demonstrate and bring Italy back where they deserve to be,” he added. “We have improved, but we still have to work a lot.

“Italy must always play to win. We arrive after some good performances, but the European Championship is in four months and I don’t think our group will be as simple as they say. We face some difficult teams, but we want to be optimistic."
