Gonzalo Higuain seemingly won’t be in the running for an Athletic Bilbao career after all, as their director of sport warned a Basque grandfather “doesn’t count.”

There were reports in Spain yesterday that the Juventus striker was being courted to sign for the club next season.

Although born in France and growing up in Argentina, it was suggested he’d be eligible for the Basque-only side because his grandfather had emigrated to Argentina from the area.

“In order to sign for us, you must’ve been either born or formed as a player here,” director of sport Rafa Alkorta told Onda Cero.

“If you do not fit these rules, then it doesn’t count. I don’t know if one day those rules could be modified, but right now, that is what they are.”
