The relationship between Pallotta and the World Cup winner was tense, and the 43-year-old left the club in controversial manners during the summer of 2019.

The Giallorossi star, who in December claimed that he “wouldn’t relive my last year as a player”, has opened the doors for a return to a role at the Olimpico if the new owner would call, saying he never wanted to leave Roma in the first place.

“If the phone call was to arrive, I would answer,” he told Il Messaggero. “I would evaluate. Never say never.

“At a certain point the hypothesis of change became concrete, then the respect for the fans and the shirt won. I could never betray a club that gave me so much.”
