Dzeko: 'Roma deserve a trophy'

Captain Edin Dzeko said Roma “deserve” to eventually win a trophy and has claimed the Giallorossi are “getting bigger and bigger” with every season.

Roma won the Coppa Italia and the Supercoppa Italiana in 2007-08 and are currently in their 11th season since picking up their last silverware.

They are still waiting to learn how the season will be concluded, as they are drawn Sevilla in their scheduled fight for a place in the quarter-finals of the Europa League.

The match has been suspended like the rest of their matches in Serie A, but the new Roma captain spoke about his hopes of change for the Giallorossi in the future.

“It’s such a shame for a club like this not to have won anything in the last years,” Dzeko told the Athletic. “Hopefully this can change, because this club, first of all, deserves to win trophies.

“There’s everything you want, everything you wish for in this club. We just need this last step: to win some trophies. Every trophy gives you more confidence and more belief that you can reach even higher, higher things.

“I have to say the club has grown so much in the last four years and it’s getting bigger and bigger every year.”

Last season the Bosnia international was linked with a move away from the Olimpico but the jeers from the fans didn’t affect the soon to be 34-year-old.

“That’s football,” he said. “Sometimes you score, and everybody loves you. Then you don’t for three or four games and almost everybody hates you.

“Maybe it’s difficult for some of the players, especially the younger ones. I’m 100 per cent sure it’s not the same if they whistle me and if they whistle one of the younger players, like [Justin] Kluivert.

Francesco Totti passed on the captaincy to Daniele De Rossi, who then left it to Alessandro Florenzi one season later and now the right-back has left on loan at Sevilla and Dzeko picked up the prestigious armband.

“It’s a privilege for me to come after all these guys. Totti and De Rossi, who are the biggest legends not just in Rome but also in Italy. It’s a bigger responsibility. I came at 30, next month I’m 34. I feel ready.”
